Time to Plant Trees

The weather is looking very good for planting trees.  A freeze or even a significant chill seems unlikely until next winter.  Trees should establish quickly and be ready to take advantage of a long growing season.

We have jaboticaba and mango trees available in 3 and 7 gallon containers and a few in 25 gallon containers.

If you have room for even a small tree, consider planting a fruit tree.

Annona of the Month

Custard Apple is the only member of our Annona collection that ripens this time of year.  We have only one tree.  This one tree had only five fruit this season.  Of the five fruit, two were necrotic and one ripened earlier today and fell.... leaving two for sale.  Each fruit weighs approximately 2 pounds.  I'll pick both later today.

10 Foot Coghall Mango with a Huge Bloom



A Glenn Mango that can't decide whether to grow or flower.  It's possible that the new growth on the tree will flower in another month or so.  More likely we will have fewer Glenn Mangos this year.

Zill Mango.  This tree did not fruit well last year.  When I did some major pruning at the end of last season, I did not trim many of the smaller branches.  As you can see, the long, older branches are flowering.

Nam Doc Mai was one of the few varieties to flower in December.  This picture shows some small fruit from those December flowers and current flowers.


 

Pruning

This almost-horizontal branch of a Keitt Mango was not strong enough to support much fruit, so I cut it back to small branches closer to the center of the tree.

 

 

This tree we are grafting over to Carrie Mango.  I eliminated most of the original variety, so that new growth will be on only the Carrie branches.  A few young shoots on the right I left in case we want to add another graft in a month or so.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ripe Fruit

Caimito (aka Star Apple) is abundant. 

Black Sapote season will last a couple more weeks.

There's lots of Sapodilla on our trees, but very little has been ready to pick.  Supply should increase for the next several weeks.

Just discovered....

Our one rogue (off-season) Jak Fruit is ripe.  I'll cut it up and refrigerate so that several people can enjoy it.  This particular Jak Fruit is fully ripe.  If you like slightly under-ripe and crunchy Jak Fruit, this one isn't for you.

We have a few Custard Apple that seem ready to pick.

A reminder... all of our fruit is grown organically.

Mid-February Update

Almost every mango tree has a huge amount of bloom.  Hopefully this will translate into a nice crop this summer.

Only one of our lychee trees is flowering, the Red Ohia.  For the past two years we haven't had lychee to sell, so having even one productive tree will be wonderful.


We plan to grow vegetables next winter.  Here's the start of that project..

The Stars

Today we picked the last Star Fruit (carambola) until July, and we picked the very first Star Apple (caimito) of the season.

Caimito season should last at least 2 months.

Finally Flowering!
