Facebook

Truly Tropical is on facebook.
Information on that site is minimal, but I started the page for ease of messaging me.  After mango season I'll try to add more pictures to it.

  • Kent
  • Duncan
  • Beverly
  • Nam Doc Mai
  • Graham
  • Neelum
  • Jakarta

Mango Storage

As many of you already know, I recommend that mangos be taken out of plastic bags immediated, then ripened on the countertop at room temperature or in a shady area of a porch, etc.  Once ripe they should be consumed or cut up and frozen for later use.

Last week Har and I went to a presentation on picking and storage of mangos given by the Mango Board.  Most of the attendees worked for large importers and distributors of mangos.  Much of the information on shipping and storage was not relevant to Truly Tropical, but it was still interesting.

The most relevant information was on chill damage.  If a mango is chilled below 55 degrees (F), damage to texture, flavor and ability to ripen correctly will occur.  Some of the damage won't be noticeable until 3-4 days after getting too cold.
This poster was made for produce departments in grocery stores, but I thought it's good for everyone to keep in mind.

Fruit for Saturday, July 19

We have picked the last fruit on several more varieties.  But this Saturday we will still have a great selection of mangos.
Duncan, Mallika, Kent, Gary, Valencia Pride look very good.
We will have the last few of Bailey's Marvel, Pim Seng Mun, Cogshall, Lemon Meringue.
Zill Indo-Chinese, Van Dyke, Beverly, Nam Doc Mai, Pram Kai Mea, Jakarta, Cushman, and Choc-anon are still producing.
Neelum and Keitt are yet to come.

Other fruit will include Carambola, Canistel and some Sapodilla.
I have tasted a couple early Sugar Apples and they have not been at full sweetness.  Sometime next week we will start selling some.

Now is the time to trim the mango trees that have finished producing fruit for the year.  This morning I trimmed three... more than 200 to go (fortunately some are small)

Another Mango Monday

The mangos continue to look great!

We will try to pick some green fruit tomorrow morning because several people want to ship fruit to friends and family.  Monday is a great day to ship.

Haden Mangos are finally coming to the end of their season.  The good news is we have more room in the $2 section for other mangos.  For Monday... Southern Blush, Rosa, Valencia Pride, Duncan, Cogshall, Haden, Florigon, Graham, Choc-anon, Van Dyke and Zill will be in the $2 section.  Also, fresh Carrie drops and blemished Carries will be available for $2 per pound.

Our $1 per pound table will include some blemished Hadens, and newly-picked Irwins, Tommy Atkins and Jubilee.

Also we will have Haden drops etc available for $5 per bag.  It would be helpful if you could bring your own Publix or Walmart bag for those.

For $3 per pound..
We still have Lemon Meringue!  ...surprised that some are still on the trees
and Carrie, Bailey's Marvel, a few Bombay, Dupuis Saigon, Zill Indo-Chinese, Mallika, Nam Doc Mai, Dot, Pram Kai Mea, Glenn, Edward
