Update on Fruit and Hours

We're open most Saturday mornings, 9-noon.  December 28 we will be closed.

Avocado season will last a few more weeks.  If you're interested in our organically-grown avocados, please stop by soon.

Three varieties of Carambola are available now.

This will be the last week for several months that Miracle Fruit will be available.

A very small amount of Sugar Apple will be available over the next few weeks.

Also we have some Black Sapote.

Beyond Mango Season

Here in the grove we are busy planting new trees and grafting different varieties onto existing trees.
If you have any space to plant something, consider planting a fruit tree.  The sooner the better!

The Last Saturday Mangos of the Season

Saturday will be the last day this year that we will have mangos for sale.  Our last variety is Keitt.

Other fruit include Avocado and Carambola, and a small amount of Atemoya and Longan.  We also will have a few mango fruit roll-ups for sale.

If you have space in your yard or on a patio, consider planting a fruit tree.  We have many plants for sale.

Another source for mangos ....  I just spoke with Walter and Verna Zill.  They have a small grove east of Bethesda Hospital (about one mile north of us), and they will still have Keitt mangos next week.

The Last Wednesday Mangos of the Season

I've checked the trees, and all of the mangos remaining can and will be picked tomorrow.  We will have more than 200 pounds of Keitt mangos for sale on Wednesday.

Mango Supply is Excellent

We've picked all of our Carrie Mangos.  The ripe mangos sold today, but we do have some green Carries that will be available for sale on Monday.  I'm not sure if any will be available after Monday.

Almost all of our Haden mangos have been picked, but some will still be available Monday.  We've just picked the last of Ryan.
Valencia Pride and Zill mango season is just beginning, and they look great. 
This morning I have been able to find some Lemon Meringue (PPK) and Duncan mangos, as well as Bailey's Marvel, Cogshall, Graham, Jakarta, Florigon, Van Dyke, Fairchild, Irwin, Glenn, Gary.
A few Sugar Apples have started to mature.

Midweek Mangos

The remaining Carrie Mangos are ripening quickly.  We've picked more than 90% of the crop.  Once again ripe Carrie Mangos will be the star of what we have to sell today. 
It's very likely that this will be the last week we will have Carries this year.

Valencia Pride mangos will soon move into the top position.  Every day I'm finding more beautiful Valencia Prides.

Haden mangos are almost finished for the summer, but we will have a very good supply this week.

We are in peak season for Carrie mangos.  Some of our trees will finish producing for the year within the next ten days.  Supply is good, and many of the mangos are ripe or close to ripe.

Perhaps by Saturday the second crop of Bailey's Marvel will start to ripen.  Valencia Pride's peak season will probably be in about 2 weeks.  Most of the second crop of Jakarta, Zill Indochinese and Beverly hasn't been picked yet.  We still have some Lemon Meringue (PPK), Florigon, Duncan, Fairchild, Glenn, and Cogshall.  We are still waiting for Zill, Van Dyke, Kent, Keitt, Best, Cushman, Bombay and Pickering.

Carambola are looking and tasting great.  We grow Bell and Fwang Tung.
Sugar Apple are at least a couple weeks away from the beginning of their season.

Monday Mangos

We won't have a lot of mangos today, but it looks like Duncan, Neelum and Carrie will be the main varieties available. 

Zill, Van Dyke, Valencia Pride aren't quite ready to pick.
Kent, Keitt, Cushman, Palmer and the second crop of Jakarta, Glenn, Beverly and Bailey's Marvel are several weeks away from being ready to pick.

Today we will also have some 'Golden Pillow' Jak Fruit, Wax Jambu and Black Sapote available.

Real and Imagined Mangos etc

 We should be loaded with mangos now, but we aren't.  I apologize for not being able to meet demand.  Unfortunately we can't just order more... we have to wait for our mangos to mature.  Fortunately July looks like it will be normal.

But for now we have some Beverly, Duncan, Mallika, a few Carrie, a few Valencia Pride, and a smattering of other varieties.

We also have NS-1 Jak Fruit available, some Sapodilla, tasty dehydrated mango treats, and coconuts.

A Quick Update

Tomorrow we will have at least two Jak Fruit available, one 8 lbs and the other 11 lbs.  We sell whole Jak Fruit  for $2.50/lb, while cut Jak Fruit is $3/lb.

So far I've picked some Beverly and Jakarta.  We should also have some Tommy Atkins, Duncan, Irwin, Mallika.  Yesterday we sold out completely.  I hope I find lots today, but it looks slim.

It's a Great Time to Plant

Take advantage of the warm and rainy season and plant tropical fruit trees soon.  South Florida is a great place to grow tropical fruit.  Try to grow something, even if all you have room for is a container plant.

We have many varieties of mango and other tropical fruit trees for sale.  If you would like a variety we don't have, we'll try to get it for you.

The lull between strong harvests of mangos continues.  We hope our supply will improve in a couple of weeks.
Valencia Pride, Nam Doc Mai and Duncan are the main mangos which will be available Saturday.  We should have some black sapote and sapodilla.  I just picked a 35-pound jak fruit which I will cut into 2 to 6 pound pieces tomorrow morning.  Also, the popular dehydrated mango products will be available.  Yesterday's winds knocked down many mangos, so we will have plenty of immature mangos for those who would like to make pickles.

I just had a vegetable masala burger and put a slice of mango on it.... Delicious!  For a wonderful change of pace, try substituting mango for tomato in sandwiches, etc.

We will be open 4-6 pm today.

The main variety available today will be Valencia Pride.  Most will need several days to ripen.
We will also have some Duncan and Nam Doc Mai available, as well as a smattering of other varieties.

...between 8 and 11am a lot more Nam Doc Mai ripened.  We now have a significant number of Nam Doc Mai.

Waiting for More Mangos

It seems we will not be able to supply enough mangos this week to meet all of the demand for them.  The season for our Nam Doc Mai is almost over, and we no longer have Florigon, Glenn, Lemon Meringue, Cogshall, Julie, Edward, Rosa, Haden, Baptiste, Tess Pollock, and DuPuis Saigon.  While we will have some Jakarta, Duncan, Gary and Nam Doc Mai, etc., other varieties are not yet ready to harvest.  We expect our harvests to increase dramatically in 2-3 weeks.

This Saturday there will be many dehydrated mango snacks available.  In addition to the mango roll-ups will be savory mango treats which contain seeds, rice and spices.

Also we might have Jak Fruit.

Thank you for visiting yesterday!  It was wonderful to see so many new customers and so many familiar faces.  Unfortunately our supply of fruit did not quite meet demand, mostly because some of our core varieties have already finished fruiting and other core varieties are not yet ready to pick.

Quick Update

We will be open on Memorial Day  ....noon - 2pm

Tomorrow we will have a lot of the very popular Nam Doc Mai.  Many other varieties will be represented including Florigon, Valencia Pride, Pim Seng Mun.  Cogshall and Glenn will not be available.  Our next major mango will be Valencia Pride.  We have a few fruit from one Valencia Pride tree, but we do not have significant quantities of that variety yet.  The amount of fruit available for sale tomorrow will be moderate, but supply should be better soon.

Because of the Sun Sentinel article on May 12, many people have been trying to buy fruit all week.  Please accept my sincere apologies for having such limited hours.  Growing so many varieties of mangos makes harvesting and set-up very time consuming, and we simply don't have time to be open more.   

May 19 ...Fruit-Picking Tour

Many people have asked if they could pick their own fruit ....so Sunday, May 19, we will offer a mango-picking tour beginning at 4pm.

The cost is $2 per person (plus the cost of the fruit you pick).  There is no charge for babies and small children who are carried for the entire tour.

We recommend wearing old clothes and closed shoes.  If you don't know if you're sensitive to the sap, please wear long-sleeve shirts and gloves.  Also we recommend wearing safety glasses or even sunglasses because under certain circumstances sap can spray near or on your face.

During Wednesday Hours...a Request for Talking Customers...

Today a reporter stopped by our grove.  She's working on a story for Sunday's paper and would like to talk with customers who are willing to be quoted in her story.  I mentioned that Saturday morning would be the best time to talk with customers since that's our busiest time, but tomorrow afternoon works much better for the newspaper.  Please stop by to chat with her if you are able....

In the Grove

Because of the warm winter etc, many of our mango varieties have had two or three blooms.  We hope to get multiple crops from Cogshall, Glenn, Valencia Pride, Lemon Meringue (PPK), Keitt, Carrie, Duncan, Tess Pollock and Pim Seng Mun.

Tomorrow we will have a decent amount of Carrie for sale.  Cogshall, Glenn, Pim Seng Mun, Haden and Florigon continue to be very strong. We will have a few Julie and Edward.  Numbers of Nam Doc Mai and Bailey's Marvel are increasing.  Several new customers were very impressed with Tess Pollock, and lots of people bought Stringies.
 
We don't know in advance how many varieties will be available on any given day, but until sometime in July we will have more than ten varieties.  In June we often have more than thirty varieties available on the same day.



Also, for those who would like to find out more about tropical fruit, I recommend the Palm Beach chapter of the Rare Fruit Council.  The club meets once a month at Mounts Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach.  The meetings are open to all and include a tasting table after an informative presentation.

The storms have picked a lot of fruit. Most of our mango varieties sell for $2/lb.  We will be selling bruised mangos of many varieties for $1/lb.

Also tomorrow..at 1 pm...  Volume discounts will be offered. Anyone purchasing at least fifty pounds of mangos will pay just $1.50 per pound.

How to Fit 25 lbs of Mangos into 3 Sandwich Bags

Yes, it takes a lot of time. 
Yes, it requires a dehydrator.
Yes, having a good supply of mangos is almost essential...

...but, dehydrating mangos produces a nutritious delicacy which takes very little space to store.


180 ounces of Mango Puree

 

I peel and pit about 25 pounds of mangos. Mixing varieties and stages of ripeness seems to improve the product. At least some of the mangos should be high in fiber. Puree the mango. I add about 8000mg of Vitamin C to about 180 ounces of puree to preserve color and freshness, and to add a slight tartness to the mixture. Then spread about 20 oz of the mixture onto nonstick sheets and dehydrate at 105 degrees until done. Drying time varies with moisture content and thickness of the mixture and humidity, but can take 12-16 hours. Then roll the sheets and slice in about one-inch pieces. The dried mango stores well in the refridgerator or freezer.

Saturday Preview

It seems the best time to find our fruit updates is Friday night.  At least the list should be accurate.

Just moments ago I ate a delicious combination of Black Sapote, strawberry ice cream, and plain yoghurt.  Black Sapote combines very well with many things...   Black Sapote with fresh orange juice is quite tasty.  Black Sapote with a bit of vanilla and whipped cream is decadent.  Try it on its own or mixed with other flavors.  I'll try to post my Black Sapote Bread recipe soon.

But I don't want to take the focus away from the other fruits.  Everyone who has tasted the Tamarind this year has loved it.  We also have new converts to Jaboticaba and Caimito.

Please remember to tell us if any fruit disappoints you in any way.  We will gladly replace it the next time you visit.

Some Thoughts on Gardens, etc.

The Vernal Equinox is right around the corner, so it seems fitting to mention some garden stuff...

Try Cardboard and/or Paper under mulch... It provides a temporary weed barrier and decomposes with the mulch.  I remove packing tape and plastic of any sort first, so just tree-based stuff is left.

If you have used or extra drywall, try breaking it up and scattering around trees.  The gypsum in it is a good source of calcium.

We are fortunate to have pets to consume our food scraps.  If you don't, try to compost.  In Florida composting is easy...just throw everything in a pile.  Covering especially tasty scraps with mulch, leaves, or grass clippings helps to keep wildlife away.  Alternatives to the pile system include picking up a composting bin from the Solid Waste Authority, making a cylinder out of chicken wire or hardware cloth, and using a garbage can with the bottom cut out.  You'll find lots of earthworms in the soil under your compost piles.

Try scattering coffee grounds around the root zones of acid-loving plants.

So often what is good for your garden is also good for the earth.  Try to be aware of the possibilities around you.  With very little effort you can improve the health of your plants and soil, reduce the amount of fertilizer and other chemicals that you purchase, and substantially reduce the amount of stuff going to our landfills.

February Fruit

Today is the last day for the current crop of Carambola.

In Mango News... the weather has been fantastic for vacationers and the mango crop! 
If the weather stays mild, we have a great mango season.  Already some varieties of mangos are two inches long..

Also of note:  Yesterday I ate the first Loquat of the season.  Loquats are a fruit that we normally don't sell, but it was tasty...
