The fruit has a mild and sweet flavor with a pudding-like consistency. Black Sapote can be eaten fresh, mixed with orange juice for a delicious drink, mixed with whipped cream for a tasty dessert, pureed with mango, etc and dehydrated, and used in baked goods. The fruit is picked green and ripens to dark gray-green color and becomes soft as a marshmallow.
