News around the grove...
We are still grafting. The unusually warm weather has made late season grafting possible and rewarding. Some of these late grafts have started growing in their first week. Next year we should have a great selection of unusual mango varieties, and some fun multi-graft trees, etc.
In a week or two we will plant two more small areas. Most of the trees will be mangos.  The tough part is deciding which varieties to plant.
Also, several of our mango trees have started to flower... including Dwarf Hawaiian, Rosa, Rosigold and Madame Francis

The 'Best' Mango

A bit on the 'Best' Mango...
There isn't one best mango.  People have different favorites depending on their backgrounds and even genetics.  Everyone's opinion is valid.  I'm often asked which variety is my favorite.  I don't have ONE favorite... which is a reason for growing more than sixty varieties.
Ironically there's a 'Best' mango at Truly Tropical.  Many years ago I planted seeds from some of my favorite mangos, and one emerged as the best of the group.  It's very popular... a premium mango that shares some flavors with Mulgoba.
Fortunately I found quite a few 'Best' mangos, and they will be available for purchase tomorrow.

Two Dollar Tuesday

TWO DOLLAR TUESDAY!!!
Tomorrow ONLY
June 30... 4-5:00 pm

All Storm mangos will be a maximum of $2 per pound....
It's a terrific time to ship.
The winds blew down a huge amount of mature but green mangos, which is actually good news. At this stage they do not bruise and will ripen with full flavor.
Because our Haden trees are so tall, they had the greatest number of mangos fall. Also available are Duncan, Nam Doc Mai, Baileys Marvel, Tess Pollock, Valencia Pride, Keitt and Kent, and the few remaining Lemon Meringue.

A full selection of mango varieties will not be available on Two Dollar Tuesday, just storm mangos.
Most of the fruit is top quality.  Most is green

Volume discounts will be available.

Open Memorial Day... Noon to 1:30

Mango Varieties and other fruit available will be essentially the same as May 23 post...
If there are any differences I'll note them tomorrow morning.

Mango Care

Mangos should be ripened on your countertop, in a paper bag, or in a cardboard box.  Plastic bags are just for convenience when purchasing.  Please take the mangos out of plastic bags as soon as possible.
Treat Mangos like Bananas.  Temperatures below 55 Fahrenheit will damage the fruit.  Extended chill will make most mangos taste like sweet mush.  I leave cut up mangos on the counter.  Whatever isn't eaten in a few hours, I freeze.
Some mango varieties might not appear ripe when they actually are.  Usually the best way to judge ripeness is smell.  The skin of Keitt, Petegrew, Mallika and Carrie will often be green when ripe.  Also, Petegrew and sometimes other varieties can take weeks to ripen.

The variety and quantity of mangos that we are picking seems to increase every day.
Mangos are a great addition to every meal, but they are especially good with summer barbeques and potlucks.  My two favorite mango recipes are in the "Recipes" section of the blog, but of course my favorite way to enjoy mangos is fresh!

Welcome Back, and Thanks!

It seemed that all the early morning customers brought their own bags!  Thank You!
And lots of regular mango customers visited for the first time this mango season... so good to see all of you!  Welcome Back!

The mangos will become increasingly plentiful over the next several weeks.  Many varieties are almost ready to pick.  We hope everyone discovers at least a few varieties to fall in love with.

Enjoy!

Some information on Conventional Bananas

Have you ever wondered why organic bananas are often picked when they are quite immature or cases of organic bananas are suddenly all ripe?
My guess was that conventional bananas are treated post harvest with something that delays ripening.  A quick search revealed that conventional bananas are commonly treated with thiabendazole and/or imazalil.
I also found this article on the impact of conventional bananas on the environment and on workers.
http://www.pan-uk.org/pestnews/Issue/pn48/pn48p9.htm

Here's a quick overview of banana production.

Black Sapote

Black Sapote (or Black Persimmon) is delicious and is a good source of vitamin A and C, and potassium.  Here's some info on it...

http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/he609

http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/black_sapote.html

I like to eat Black Sapote fresh by itself or with other fruit, or in green smoothies (which should be renamed "black smoothies").  Black Sapote makes excellent ice cream, and great faux German Chocolate cake.

Fruit for Saturday, January 3

Late afternoon I picked carambola, black sapote and sugar apple.  They look great.

We have started to sell mint, and soon basil will be ready to harvest.  We have parsley planted, but it's still small.
