Ripe Fruit

Whatever ripe mangos we find sell instantly.  Most of the fruit is a few days from being ripe.

Suggestions for ripening fruit at home...
Warm temperature is very important for faster ripening.  Some people put their fruit in their garage or screened porch.  Take fruit out of plastic bags and let ripen in the open air or in a paper bag or cardboard box.

Part of the Mango Selection from earlier this week.

Fortunately Ripe Mangos are on the way...
In the next few weeks we hope to have more ripe fruit to sell.
Always nice to see ripe fruit!  This one is Haden.

Here are a couple of fruit I tasted today.  Both were undersized and shriveled, but mostly ripe.  Both were not as good as full-term fruit, but delicious.

A Mulgoba... less than half the size of a mature fruit.
I found it under the tree.  My best guess is it had been there about 2 weeks.
(I tasted the bottom of the fruit)

A Carrie Drop.. It dehydrated during the ripening process.

Inside the Carrie Mango.  I shared with a very picky mango eater who agreed it was delicious.
(Of course not as good as fully ripe and fully mature Carrie mango.)

I would like to sell full-sized ripe fruit, but often the fruit falls before it's picked.  And sometimes this happens...

Open Memorial Day

Monday we will be open 12-2.

It's likely that we will have more ripe fruit than we've had recently... definitely some Lemon Meringue, but some of other varieties also.  The overall mango supply continues to be light.

My best guess is the peak of Lemon Meringue season will be in about 2 weeks.  We don't have a lot of this variety now, but the supply should improve.
Glenn Mangos will probably start ripening in earnest in 1-2 weeks.
Cushman season will start soon, perhaps within a week.
We will have a few Nam Doc Mai fruit every day, but I think the peak season for that variety will be in 3 weeks.
Carrie Mangos might start ripening in about 2 weeks.
Florigon might be strong next week.
We are picking the second crop of Jakarta, and hoping their season will last another 3-4 weeks.
Bailey's Marvel might start ripening in 2 weeks.
Pim Seng Mun season might start in a week.
Baptiste is almost ready

We don't have a lot of mangos now... a few of the varieties that we've been selling for the last few weeks.  I'll search again tomorrow morning.

Other Fruit:  Black Sapote are done for the season.  We will have Sapodilla.

Good News for Saturday

I've picked the first Lemon Meringue mangos.  There isn't a lot, but there will be more next week. Of course I'll check the trees again before we open.
Other varieties of mango making their first appearance include Southern Blush, Glenn, Dot and Cogshall.  We have only a few mangos of each of these varieties, but more are on the way.
We will have some Dwarf Hawaiian and Edward, and a pretty good showing of Jakarta and Rosa.
Haden is small... a result of not much rain, a huge fruit set and early maturity of some of the fruit. The Hadens we have picked have not ripened on the tree, but are mature.  The mangos that aren't ready to pick will continue to grow, so the Hadens that we pick in two weeks should be larger than the ones we're picking now.

Also Tamarind, Sapodilla and Wax Jambu.

The Jak Fruit is still not ripe.

We will be open 12-2 on Monday (Memorial Day)

Quick Notes on Mangos this year

Most of our trees flowered in late February, so most of the mangos will ripen in June and July.
This year we won't have many Valencia Pride, Julie or Tess Pollock.
Last year we had few Southern Blush, Dupuis Saigon and Pram Kai Mea, and no Philippine mangos, but this year we should have a respectable amount of each of these varieties.
It looks like it'll be a good year for Haden, Cushman, Ryan, Edward, and Gary.
Production of other varieties we seems typical, but I'll add some specifics later.

Mango Spotlight... Dwarf Hawaiian

Dwarf Hawaiian has a very enthusiastic fan base.  This squat, richly-flavored mango variety purportedly is a cross between Kent and Julie.  Its fruit typically weighs about 3/4 pound, but can range from less than 1/2 pound to 1 pound.  The Dwarf Hawaiian is productive and has more than one crop each season. The tree is easy to keep at ten feet or less.

Because the Dwarf Hawaiian is such a popular variety, we have started producing grafted Dwarf Hawaiian plants.  They aren't quite tall enough to sell, but might be by the end of June.

All three of these mangos are perfect to eat.  The black spots usually don't affect the flesh.
These mangos weigh two pounds.

This Dwarf Hawaiian tree is about 12 years old.
It's almost the end of the Dwarf Hawaiian season so only a few fruit are left on the tree.

Here's my current favorite way to fix collard greens....

Take center ribs out of leaves

Roll tightly

Slice thinly

Chop

Sautee in olive oil
Add tablespoon of water and cover to finish cooking

Add spoonful of Hoisin Sauce.  Stir thoroughly.

General Information, Hours, and Updates

Hours through the end of Mango Season....

Monday 12-2pm
Wednesday 4-6 pm
Thursday 2-4pm
Saturday 9am-noon

Mangos
Current Varieties This year our early varieties have been Florigon, Edward, Rosa, Nam Doc Mai, Jakarta and Dwarf Hawaiian.  It looks like Lemon Meringue (PPK) might start ripening in about 3 weeks.  Most of our fifty varieties will ripen in June.
Pricing Almost every grocery store charges $2 per pound for conventionally-grown mangos.  I have never tasted a mango from a grocery store that I liked ..even a little.  Most mangos sold in the US are grown in other countries, picked very green, treated with steam or dumped in hot water and kept cold for weeks before appearing on the grocery store shelf.
The mangos we grow are full of flavor and usually picked within 24 hours of being sold.  Most of our varieties are too delicate to be sold commercially.  All are grown organically.
This year we will continue to sell most of our mangos for $2 per pound.  If we harvest a huge amount of one variety we will probably offer a quantity discount on that variety.  Select mangos will be $3 per pound.

Other Produce
Sapodilla
Black Sapote

Unfortunately the expanded hours this week do not reflect an increased supply of mangos.  Not yet. But now is a great time to plant.  We have a large selection of fruit trees, especially mangos.

Our small selection of fruit will include a few mangos, sapodilla and black sapote.
Also we will have collard greens, parsley and rosemary for sale.

Fruit for Saturday, May 3

Sorry of the late post... too tired yesterday evening

Fruit is similar to last week, but fewer mangos.

Mangos
Very Few Rosa
Some Edward
Some Jakarta
Very few Nam Doc Mai
Very Few Florigon
Some Dwarf Hawaiian

This year most of the mango varieties will be available much later than usual.  The mangos that are available now represent only a small fraction of the crop for these varieties.  For example, we have several Nam Doc Mai trees, but only a few branches of one of the trees have mature fruit now.
The total amount of mango fruit available for sale is dismal.  Try to be patient... June should be a great month.

Last day for Caimito
A few Sapodilla

The two Golden Pillow Jak fruit that I've been watching are significantly bigger than the previous ones that I've harvested from that tree, but are still not ready.

Even though the mangos are sparse, we have a great selection of fruit trees... especially mango trees.  With rain in the forecast, today should be a great day to plant.

Open today, 9am-noon
