Last Saturday for Mangos

Last week it looked like we would have mangos for two more Saturdays.  Unfortunately the squirrels are tasting far too many, so we're picking all remaining mangos tomorrow morning.

This evening I picked the first atemoya of the season!

Also available are sugar apples and a few carambola.

Two jak fruit are still on the trees, but are not yet ripe.

Last Minute News and Suggestions for the Bounty

Tomorrow might be the last Saturday of the summer that we will have Glenn mangos.  Tomorrow's supply is good because the mangos still on the trees are all ripening at the same time.
Also plentiful are the very popular Carrie mangos.
The supply of Po Pyu Kalai (Lemon Meringue) mango is good, but we're nearing the end of its season.
We have a decent amount of Bailey's Marvel, and there are plenty still on the tree.
Also we should have some of the varieties listed on the previous post.

Again we will sell drops for half price.  Most are from our large Haden mango trees.

One excellent use of imperfect fruit is for fruit leather.  Put bruised parts and good flesh in a blender with Vitamin C (ascorbic acid to preserve freshness) until pureed, then spread on non-stick sheets and dehydrate at 110 degrees until done.  Roll up the sheets of dried mango and cut with sharp knife.
You can mix many varieties of mango, but make sure some of the fruit is bruised and some has fiber.  Also you can add other types of fruit to the mix.  I've tried passion fruit, guava, carambola, and canistel.

Other uses include making Mango Bread and Mango Crisp (click on "Recipes"), making chutney, pureeing for mango juice (add water for desired thickness), and freezing for later in the year.

Fruit for Tomorrow...

We will be open tomorrow, March 31, from 9am until noon.
This morning I spotted a few ripe mangos, so I'll pick those for sale tomorrow. Quantity and selection are EXTREMELY limited. It looked like the only trees with ripe mangos were Rosa and Dwarf Hawaiian.
Also we will have some Caimito (Star Apple) available.

Sunday, March 18, 2012

Closed for Two Saturdays

Because of other commitments, we will be closed...

Saturday, March 24
and
Saturday, April 28

The mangos are looking great, and we expect to have some to sell in the beginning of May.

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

Closed first Saturday in March

Caimito season has begun! Caimito, aka Star Apple, is purple when ripe. The flesh in the center of the fruit is white and usually forms a star pattern. The fruit is eaten fresh and has a very pleasant, slight-grape flavor.
We will be closed March 3rd. If you are eager to purchase some fruit, please call 278-7754 for an appointment. If you can wait until next Saturday morning (March 10), just stop by between 9am and noon.
In other news... Some of our mango varieties look like they will ripen early. We plan to start selling mangos the first Saturday of May.
